Baked Beef Murtabak/Curry Puff Recipe

I have to admit that my intention was to make curry puff but after 2 failed attempt at making the dough myself, I scrapped the idea and decided to use the spring roll wrapper that I have in my fridge and wrapped the filling ala-murtabak. Murtabak is an Indian Muslim dish commonly found in Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Brunei and apparently in Yemen too where they are called Motabbag which means 'the folded'. I just found that out myself thanks to Wikipedia. In Malaysia, it would either come with beef or chicken filling and it has among other ingredients, egg and onion and folded with the same dough as roti pratha or roti canai.

For my Murtabak/Curry Puff, I did not use egg since I used ready-made spring roll wrapper which is thicker than the original dough used for murtabak.

Baked Beef Murtabak/Curry Puff
Makes 12-15

2 potatoes (peeled and cubed 1/4")
1/3/lb ground beef
1 red onion (cubed 1/8")
1 tbsp curry powder
1/2-1 tbsp chilli powder
salt & sugar
1 cup water
2 tbsp oil
Spring roll wrapper

1. In a wok or pan, heat the oil and saute the onion.

2. In a small bowl, mix curry powder and chilli powder with some water and add to the wok until fragrant.

3. Add the ground beef and stir. When the meat is brown, add the potatoes, water, salt and sugar and stir until the water dries. Taste.

4. When the filling is done, let it cool for 15-20min.

5. Preheat oven at 325F

6. Lay out the spring roll wrapper on a plate, put the filling in the middle. Fold first end, followed by the 2 side ends and wet the last end with a little bit of water so it sticks. Repeat until all the filling are used. (The size would be about 3"x2.5")

7. Transfer to a baking sheet and bake for 10-15min each side until they turn golden brown.

Farina, murtabak you look so crispy!! actually you can use the frozen roti canai for this. Just roll it a bit thiner and then wrap it up with the filling then pan fried or bake it.

Ila, i guess it is kinda like samosa. ;)

Gert, actually i wanted to do like u did but im running low on roti pratha n have a whole pack of spring roll wrapper.

Sri, i know tht feeling too well! lol. does ur kids like curry flavor?

Envy, it is very easy to make and if ur in laws cant take spicy food, just scrap the chili powder. lemme kno the result ok?

Dhanggit, thank u. yes i decided to bake instead of fry since the filling is already kinda oily.

Daphne, baked so i dont really feel guilty eating them since well, i ate most of them while hubby only had 2. lol.

CC, welcome and thank u for commenting. no worries since the only dif that i kno is tht spring roll wrapper is bigger than wonton.

Farina,
you're a lifesaver. I have been craving for murtabak for years, didn't think of using spring roll wrapers .... duh! I've been holding off making murtabak because there's no way in hell I'm making my own dough.... well, maybe when Josh is a bit older. :) Your murtabak looks yummylicious.

Do they have puff pastry over there? I used that to make curry puffs making puff pastry. It's easy and you do not have to make dough from scratch. But I think the spring roll wrapper is a perfectly ingenious idea too!

p/s : i don't even know how to 'kelepet' (u know yg tepi karipap tu in order to get it nicely folded) the karipap ok! while my very-not-domestic-at-all sister is so good at it..*slap forehead*

Yatie, when i see my friend making the dough it looks simple but everytime I did it, mesti tak jadi.

Tigerfish, i think they do but since i never use it, i didn even think to look for it at the store. next time il go look for it. ;)

Sig, welcome and thank u for leaving a comment. using the wrapper cuts down the time spent in the kitchen and i like that! lol.
