Kuih Bahulu Recipe



Thank you all for participating in the guessing and choosing game. Yes it is Kuih Bahulu. A traditional Malaysian kuih that can be found mostly during Hari Raya (Eid) or Chinese New Year. They came in various shapes. Sometimes flowery and other times in goldfish shape. And just like durian, I dont discriminate them by their shapes. Mine however look like a tiny acorn according to Michael. And now the image is stuck in my head and so does the movie Ice Age!


As mentioned in my previous post, I had to do something to redeem my failure in making Pandan Chiffon Cake. What better way than making something else that is fluffy, sweet and cute such as kuih bahulu?

For this, I followed the recipe from Rasa Malaysia since her Kuih Bahulu Recipe sounds easy and simple enough to follow. Just what an amatuer like me need and if I can make them, so can you.
Kuih Bahulu
Makes between 30-35 cute little thang

3 eggs
1 cup sugar
1 1/4 cup flour
1/4 tsp baking soda
2 tsp vanilla essence
2 tbsp butter

1. Pre-heat oven at 375F

2. In a bowl, beat eggs until frosty then add sugar. Continue beating gradually changing from slow to fastest until mixture becomes sticky. About 12-15min.

3. Add vanilla essence and gradually add in the flour and butter. Continue beating for another 10min on high.

4. Grease mould and fill up to 3/4 of the 'holes'.

5. Bake for 15 min.

6. Once done, use a toothpick or wooden skewer to 'pick' them out and lay out on cooling rack.

7. Continue steps 4-6 until all batter are used.

Yours are perfectly baked. Mine was actually over baked because I lost track of time and they are terlalu perang. LOL.

Lovelies! .. Thanks for the recipe .. looks easy enough for me to make .. as to when I'll be making them .. I don't really know :p but I think I should make them for Raya .. I will make them for Raya! .. by the way .. I'm serious about the recipe for the Tepung Pelita .. email it to me ? .. Thanks again dear :)

Btw .. I don't have the mould for it .. wonder if I can use cup cakes mould for them ?? ..

BY, i checked mine before the 15min was up but 15 on my oven was good. ;)

Envy, yes i will email to u the recipe for tepung pelita.

Anjum & Envy, im not really sure if you ca use cupcakes mould since usually for bahulu, you need a thicker and heavier mould. Mine is cast iron. Maybe you can try using the smallest cupcake mould. Hope that helps.

Your kue bolu remind me to my childhood, my mother used to buy it for us. The recipe is quite simple and easy, may I try it someday.

Hi Farina, congratulation on your new food blog! I really envy you...I wish I have the time to do my own food blog too but with 2 kids, I cant even keep up with my fotopage let alone another blog:0
FYI, this year I wont be going back for raya sob sob!!! I am really tempted to try your bahulu recipe..nampak sedap sangat!!

Yani, thanks! jgn sedih. i pun tak balik (again!) so kenalah make the best with the situation. Do try the bahulu. It is really easy and sedap giler. If its not easy to make, trust me, i wouldn say it is. i ni kan queen of easy food! lol.
