Tepung Pelita

Tepung Pelita is like the best dessert in Malaysia and especially more so during fasting month. I could not tell you enough how much I miss having this sweet, creamy (coconout milk creamy) and a little bit salty eversince I moved here. Tepung Pelita is a must-have in my family. And that must-have is everyday for the whole of fasting month. I dont know why the cravings get crazy during fasting month since I dont really mind not having them for the rest of the 11months in the year. This craziness for Tepung Pelita doesnt just happen in my family but also by my friends/readers of my other blog as admitted by them here.

This year I am finally brave enough to make Tepung Pelita. My quest for the recipe brought me to a few sites/blogs of those who has made this before but the recipe and how-to is basically the same. 3 major differences that I found are 1) whether or not its steamed 2) with or without the sugar syrup at the bottom 3) whether or not you're using the banana leaves as the 'boat'.

The original Tepung Pelita are usually steamed, with sugar syrup at the bottom AND comes in small 'boat' made of banana leaves as seen here. This picture is taken from hanieliza.fotopages.com. This is how tepung pelita is sold in its 'original form'. I can eat between 3-4 and sometimes even more of these everyday during fasting month. *wink*

You can go here to see pictures of how its made step-by-step. Below is the recipe that I used with some modifications.

1 + 3tbsp cup rice flour
1 cup sugar
5 cups water
2 tsp pandan paste
4 cups coconut milk
4 tbs rice flour
A bit of salt
2 square Glass or ceramic bowls (9x9 or 10x10)

1. In a pot, mix 1 + 3 tbsp cup rice flour, 1 cup sugar, 5 cups water and 2 tsp pandan paste and stir well until smooth. Keep aside.

2. In a different pot, mix coconut milk, 4 tbsp rice flour and salt and stir well. Keep aside.

3. Cook no.1 on slow heat, stirring continuously until shiny.

4. Pour equally into the 2 glass bowls.

5. Now cook no.2 it thickens. You must stir all the time to avoid the flour from getting clumpy.

6. Pour onto the 1st layer.

7. Refrigerate overnight and enjoy once its chilled.

Tepung pelita sedapnya... Banana leaves yang frozen tu you kena thaw dia or run through with warm water.it will be soft and easier to shape it.

You had me at coconut milk. If I was to choose when I was little, I would want it as nourishment. Your dish looks so inviting!!!

ToH, now you know the name. ;)

Zue, i did thaw the banana leaves but they still refused to be folded. Maybe theyr just too old?

Nazarina, welcome! If you like coconut milk, stay tune. Iv got a few more recipes rich with coconut milk for Eid. ;)

Pearly thank you.;) yes iv been cooking a lot lately. So you dalam pantang now and cant take coconut milk ya? I also just made ayam percik whc uses lotsa santan. Will be posting the recipe soon.

Yatie, memang senang nak buat tepung pelita like this but the recipe gives you a lot so maybe you can just use half of the recipe. When u kacau the green mix tu, make sure you stir all the time and add more pandan paste if its not green enough for you. ;)

*DROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL!!!!!* this brings back memories of lazy sunday afternoons, stopping by those stalls at the side of the road to buy all the different kuih-muih :)

which reminds me, i need to find a recipe for that "kuih bom" - lol, i don't know it by any other name but it's those chewy green things with coconut shavings on the outside, and when you bite into it, the "bom" explodes and your mouth is filled with brown sugar and a little hard piece of it (or is it palm sugar?)

lol! that's right - thanks for the reminder of what it's actually called. i think as a kid it was just more exciting to say "kuih bom"; since then the name just kinda stuck with me :)

Nak tanya, tepung pelita ori nih dlm bekas daun pandan ke daun pisang ? camne yerk nak lipat jadi bekas cenggitu, ada tips atau link tak ?

Thanks ye.

Salt N Turmeric said...

Haniff, kalau kat Msia diorang guna daun pisang. Daun pandan tu kecik camne nak lipat. lol. I sorry but I dont remember seing any site that shows how to fold it so i cant help you there.

Fantastic! I'll make this the next chance I get. Unfortunately my other half and I are in a race to lose a few kg by year end. :)

Argus Lou said...

I didn't have green pandan paste, only clear liquid essence, so I replaced some of the sugar with gula melaka. I did 3/4 of the recipe but only 1/4 of the creamy topping (diet sikit!).

How long do you cook the first rice flour mixture for "until it's shiny"? Twenty minutes or so? I used medium and medium-low heat.

Thanks again.

Salt N Turmeric said...

Argus, sorry for the late reply. Oh my! Its been so long since i made these. can't really remember how long it took before it gets shiny but i remember asking myself the same thing and then the mix really became shiny right in front of my eyes. lol.

Argus Lou said...

No worries - it's been only 2 days. :) I guess I took the coloured batter off the heat too soon as I didn't get the 'eureka' moment of ultra-shininess. Maybe that's why the kuih remains rather soft even after refrigeration. It's supposed to be cut into pieces, right? Well, we ate it by scooping it carefully into a bowl. *lol!* My German other half likes it too and says it reminds him of a Swiss/German pureed chestnut dessert (probably on account of my using gula melaka). Thanks much.

Salt N Turmeric said...

Oh i think you did just great with your tepung pelita. It was rather soft and you can't cut it into pieces. Memang you have to scoop it out instead of cutting. :)
